Our Policy Campaigns

Our health departments and 200 community partners work together to create policies that protect health and increased economic opportunity. Because policy only improves our life when it's well implemented, we also provide training to government and community to help ensure policy and resources achieve our goals for health equity and shared economic prosperity. All of our work focuses on creating a more racially just and equitable world.

Health Equity Impact Areas

When families pay and spend a high proportion of their earnings on housing, they are often forced to reduce spending on food, medical care, and prescriptions. BARHII works toward making housing affordable for many different income families to improve health. This work includes supporting local efforts for affordable or supportive housing.

The impact of education on health goes beyond what health behaviors are learned in the classroom. People with more education are more likely to live in safer neighborhoods where they have access to healthy foods, good schools, and green space for exercise. BARHII works with local health departments to promote strategies to address the educational achievement gap, and our ECE Regional Roundtable meets every other month to share information, align advocacy and learn from each other.  Contact us for more information

Public Health programs rely on the community's trust and has a requirement to protect the health of all residents. BARHII is working with local health departments and organizations to discuss impacts of proposed federal policies, learn about public agency responses, and build skills to ensure continued service to health equity communities.

Economic Opportunity and Inclusion

Poverty and housing instability create an environment of toxic stress that harms children and families. BARHII studies and provides information on the connection between health and economic inclusion.

Climate change threatens the very systems on which human life depends - our water, food, shelter, and security. When it comes to transportation, people who ride public transit move more. BARHII works to incorporate principles of health equity into land use and transportation planning and actively focuses on adaption planning for the Bay Area.

Inequities based on class, race, and gender in the distribution of power and resources and in the priorities of institutional policies and practices define the ways in which social determinants of health contribute to health inequities. BARHII is committed to moving the momentum of public health toward a greater focus on social determinants of health and health inequities.

Moving Money Upstream to Prevention

It's more expensive for both quality of life and for the healthcare system to be treating symptoms of the disease rather than the disease itself. Moving our funds upstream toward prevention is a better investment for our future and for the health of all people.

BARHII has several Communities of Practice hosted on a monthly basis and focused on different areas of the health equity field. From data collection and analysis to creating a legislative platform, these committee groups allow for experts and newcomers to collaborate on and learn about new public health topics.

These committees are hosted monthly and are open to all.
