Why job-protected parental leave is essential, how it benefits everyone, and more.

Rise Together co-hosted a Twitter Chat #AskLAAW #ParentalLeave with more than 20 organizations on September 28th in support of the Parental Leave Protections and to urge Governor Jerry Brown to sign SB 63.  We shared resources and stories about new parents’ workplace rights in California and beyond — and why they are so incredibly important for children, families, and employers.

 

SB 63 (Jackson), the New Parent Leave Act, ensures that more Californians can take leave to care for a newborn without the fear of losing their jobs. Under current law, only those who work for an employer of 50 or more are eligible for job-protected leave. However, more than 40 percent of California workers risk losing their jobs if they take advantage of California’s Paid Family Leave Program, which they are already paying into, because they work for smaller employers.
